Give thanks...

Enter His gates with thanksgiving
and His courts with praise;
give thanks to Him and praise His Name.
For the Lord is good and His love endures forever;
His faithfulness continues through all generations.
Psalm 100:4-5

Coming to China, I'll admit I was a bit apprehensive about spending the holiday season away from my family and friends. I wasn't quite sure what I was getting myself into. I love the holidays. I love being with the ones I love. I love the feeling of being able to sit by a fire at my parents' house as it gets colder outside. And during this time of the year, I especially love the delicious food of Thanksgiving and the fellowship of preparing for Christmas. So I wasn't really sure what to expect. I knew that I would be spending Thanksgiving with other Americans feeling the same way so I hoped it would be a day that gave me a glimpse into one of my favorite traditions...

Thankfully, that's exactly what happened, and our Father graciously blessed me with a day full of fun, food and fellowship with my ND family, and I couldn't have asked for anything more. The day turned out to be packed full of fun as myself and the other interns started off with teaching some of the kids how to make mashed potatoes...

And they were all ready to be good helpers!

The first step was to wash the potatoes so they were given bowls of water to scrub their potato in...

After that, they helped us peel them (with fake knives for the little ones and lots of guidance for the older ones). Then we chopped the freshly peeled potatoes, boiled them, and gave each child a bowl to mash the potatoes up in. Our next step was to add milk and butter...

And we ended up with lots of smiling faces!

So after all the food was prepared, the kids all sat down to a Thanksgiving feast complete with fresh fruit, chicken, mashed potatoes with gravy, green beans, corn, stuffing, sweet potatoes, and pumpkin pie! It was delicious!

It was the perfect Thanksgiving! We even had a few adorable pilgrims and indians present...

How cute are they?

Overall it was a wonderful time. And I can't be anymore thankful to have had the opportunity to spend a holiday based on blessings with the little ones that have blessed me so much the past several months. Looking back on last Thursday, I can't help but thank our Father for His love and faithfulness, His provision and understanding...He has given me so much and I realize that my natural response can be nothing less than to give thanks to Him and praise His Name...

Oh the places you'll go...

Congratulations! Today is your day. You’re off to Great Places! You’re off and away! You have brains in your head. You have feet in your shoes. You can steer yourself any direction you choose. You’re on your own. And you know what you know. And YOU are the guy who’ll decide where to go... ( Oh the Places You'll Go by Dr. Suess)   I love this book. I really do. And it's funny just how true it seems to be. I've heard it and read it a million and one times and every time, I never thought the day would come when I would really have a choice about the places I would go. There's an order to life: preschool...kindergarten...1st, 2nd, 3rd grade, all the way up to high school graduation. Sure, I got to pick the college I wanted to attend, but I always knew I would go to college so I never had to wonder what my next step would be for 22 years of my life. But then this happened... Yep. College graduation. And everything changed. I had options. Well, ...

Smiling's my favorite...

One of my very favorite Christmas movies is the 2003 comedy, Elf , starring Buddy the Elf. There's a point in the movie when Buddy gets a job at a department store and the new manager asks him, "Why are you smiling like that?" To this Buddy simply replies, "I just like to smile. Smiling's my favorite." I can't get over that quote and the simply joy it holds. You can't go wrong with a smile. I mean think about it. It's the universal sign for happiness. Everyone recognizes a smile to mean that you have found gladness in some part of life whether it be something big or small. Oh how I long to find the joy and love that Buddy experiences in life, for how often do you genuinely smile about something without having even the slightest feeling of love and joy towards it? When I think about my time here in China, I can't deny the presence of smiles all around me. I have to admit that (though I miss everyone I love and care about back home mo...

Meet my girls...

Time is a strange thing, ya know? One thing from ten years ago might seem like it happened yesterday whereas you're convinced that the thing that happened yesterday was ten years ago. So far India appears to be this way. Though I arrived here just two-and-a-half weeks ago, it seems like its been an eternity. But at the same time, I feel like I was just in China spending time with the people and children I love so much. And with its contorted sense of time (where 5 minutes could mean 5 hours or even 5 days later), India's feeling of time doesn't get any better (yes I know you'd think that it would be perfect for me, but even I'm waiting on people all the time here). So as I'm 19 days in, I find myself trying to figure out exactly what I've been doing with my time... Since my arrival, I kind of hit-the-ground-running. The plan was for me to take over running a home for the school-aged girls that SCH recently opened in November. So basically I'm oversee...
