That special person...

No matter how old or independent you get, you never seem to be too grown up for your Mom. So leading up to my Mom's arrival in India, you can't imagine the excitement that I felt with the knowledge that we would soon be reunited. I planned out all the adventures that we would go on, anticipating the day that I would finally see her.

We had so much to do, and with less than two weeks to do it all in, our time was full of adventures.

After two exhausting days of air travel for her and an overnight bus ride for me, we were reunited in Hyderabad and had a quick turnaround as we set out to fly to Delhi for a few days packed with tourism.

Upon our arrival, we visited one of the six ancient cities of Delhi called Qutub Minar,

did some shopping at a local craft market, and even ate some delicious American food at TGI Friday's and Hard Rock Cafe...YUM.

We went on a safari at Jim Corbett National Park where we saw peacocks, monkeys, beautifully colored birds, and then some tiger...markings on a tree...and some elephant...footprints...slightly disappointing...

Although we couldn't see all the "cool" animals of the safari, the time (14 hours total) spent in the car traveling to and from the park was well worth it as we drove through the Indian towns and villages and had the opportunity to catch up on the last six months of life.

We even took a day trip to visit Agra, home of the Taj Mahal...

After five days packed full of sightseeing and catching up on life, we headed back to Hyderabad and then onto Ongole for the part of her trip that I was most excited about: letting her meet my girls and see what exactly I'd been up to the past three months. I had missed my girls and I was ready for my Mom to see just how wonderful and special they are...

I think she had a wonderful time, and the girls absolutely loved her. She brought them great toys and clothes, and I was able to do crafts like modeling clay and decorating the house that had never wanted to attempt on my own...

We spent the afternoon at the park one day where the girls were delighted to play with the bubbles and sidewalk chalk that she brought them...

They got adorable new dresses made by some sweet friends that they all loved...

And I was especially blessed as she had timed her visit for my birthday so we had a small party with my girls and ate some delicious cake!

I couldn't be more thankful for the time my Mom spent here. Her kind spirit and good insight was refreshing and something that I desperately needed as my time here begins to draw to a close. The importance of having people like that in my life has especially made itself evident during the last 6.5 months. As I've gone throughout my time, the importance of community and people to encourage me along the way have become a necessity and evidence of God's grace each day.

So I pray that you would recognize the importance of community today. May you find and hold onto that person in your life that encourages you. May you be the person that someone else looks to as having a kind heart and good insight, someone that is refreshing to the spirit. And no matter what place you're in, may you never forget that your Heavenly Father longs to fill your heart with His grace for each new day...

  2. Haley, We continue to lift your name before Our Heavenly Father and are so thankful for you willingness to serve Him and show His love to these precious girls. Last night, Wednesday, April 4, our discipleship group looked at "Authintic Relationships and Giving Real Support". Your blog reemphasised our lesson on being thankful for the people God places in our lives that we can depend on to be there for us. So glad that you and your mom had such a great time. I look forward to hearing about her trip from her. We love and miss you here. God's richest blessings be on you and your ministry. Tim

Oh the places you'll go...

Congratulations! Today is your day. You’re off to Great Places! You’re off and away! You have brains in your head. You have feet in your shoes. You can steer yourself any direction you choose. You’re on your own. And you know what you know. And YOU are the guy who’ll decide where to go... ( Oh the Places You'll Go by Dr. Suess)   I love this book. I really do. And it's funny just how true it seems to be. I've heard it and read it a million and one times and every time, I never thought the day would come when I would really have a choice about the places I would go. There's an order to life: preschool...kindergarten...1st, 2nd, 3rd grade, all the way up to high school graduation. Sure, I got to pick the college I wanted to attend, but I always knew I would go to college so I never had to wonder what my next step would be for 22 years of my life. But then this happened... Yep. College graduation. And everything changed. I had options. Well, ...

Smiling's my favorite...

One of my very favorite Christmas movies is the 2003 comedy, Elf , starring Buddy the Elf. There's a point in the movie when Buddy gets a job at a department store and the new manager asks him, "Why are you smiling like that?" To this Buddy simply replies, "I just like to smile. Smiling's my favorite." I can't get over that quote and the simply joy it holds. You can't go wrong with a smile. I mean think about it. It's the universal sign for happiness. Everyone recognizes a smile to mean that you have found gladness in some part of life whether it be something big or small. Oh how I long to find the joy and love that Buddy experiences in life, for how often do you genuinely smile about something without having even the slightest feeling of love and joy towards it? When I think about my time here in China, I can't deny the presence of smiles all around me. I have to admit that (though I miss everyone I love and care about back home mo...

Meet my girls...

Time is a strange thing, ya know? One thing from ten years ago might seem like it happened yesterday whereas you're convinced that the thing that happened yesterday was ten years ago. So far India appears to be this way. Though I arrived here just two-and-a-half weeks ago, it seems like its been an eternity. But at the same time, I feel like I was just in China spending time with the people and children I love so much. And with its contorted sense of time (where 5 minutes could mean 5 hours or even 5 days later), India's feeling of time doesn't get any better (yes I know you'd think that it would be perfect for me, but even I'm waiting on people all the time here). So as I'm 19 days in, I find myself trying to figure out exactly what I've been doing with my time... Since my arrival, I kind of hit-the-ground-running. The plan was for me to take over running a home for the school-aged girls that SCH recently opened in November. So basically I'm oversee...
